The Private Garden at Fullers Hill

The Butterfly Garden. This is the private garden for the Tack Room apartment, and is so called because of the profusion of butterflies that enjoy a particular plant which has rather taken over here! Verbena bonariensis grows tall and wiry, and is topped with abundant clusters of mauve flowers which are hugely attractive to butterflies and bees alike. It has long been one of my favourite plants, and fits well into almost any scheme, with a lengthy flowering period which carries on well into November if the weather is fairly mild. The flowers themselves have a luminescence which is very apparent on duller days, when their colour seems to become […]

Wheat Harvest at Fullers Hill Cottages

Where did the wheat go? The Cambridge Holiday Cottages in the heart of the working farm at Fuller’s Hill Farm. The farm covers some 450ha of beautiful rolling countryside in SW Cambridgshire. The wheat harvest of 2012 will sadly go down in farming folk law as one of the worst in living memory.  The crop was one of the poorest yielding and worst quality that any living farmer can remember. At Fullers Hill Farm we did not produce a single ton of wheat that meet the basic quality standards for any use, not even for chicken feed. The most dis-appointing part of this was that in early June the wheat […]

The Old Farm Cart

part of the history of Fullers Hill Farm, Lt Gransden. The Jefferies family have always been very proud of their heritage and past. The late Harold Gadson Jefferies served in the trenches in WW1. Its not known how he gathered together the capital to purchase the farm in 1923, which was initially 270 acres arable and live stock. Grandfather was always very proud to exhibit the farm produce at the agricultural show. Gransden and District Agricultural Society Annual Show was established in 1891. It has been held every year since then, with the exception of the war years of 1939-1945. The 2012 Show will be the 110th such event held […]

The mill stones at Cambridge Holiday Cottages Fullers hill.

The mill stones at Cambridge Holiday Cottages. Two mill stones from separate sources have found there way to Fullers Hill Cottages and used as decoration in the yard. The oldest stone was recovered from Gamlingay wind mill on Potton road. In 1977 Mark Jefferies an employee at Fullers Hill Farm with Barry Sherman was sent to help Mr Les Barford a well known and liked local builder.  Mr Barford who owned the site as a builder’s yard needed the mill demolishing as it had become extremely unsafe. The mill was probably disused by 1922. I recall scaling a long ladder to attach a rope to some part of the structure […]
