MacMillan Coffee Morning

The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is Macmillan’s biggest fundraising event for people facing cancer. They ask people all over the UK to host their own Coffee Mornings and donations on the day are made to Macmillan. Last year alone they raised £25 million and this year they are aiming to raise even more. The first ever Coffee Morning happened way back in 1990. It was a rather small affair with a simple idea: guests would gather over coffee and donate the cost of their cuppa to Macmillan in the process. It was so effective, they did it again the next year – only this time nationally. Since then, Coffee Morning […]

Barn Owls Spotted at Fuller’s Hill Cottages

This spring, at Fullers Hill Cottages, we have had a real treat. A pair of Barn Owls are frequently seen around the farm. They fly between the trees and buildings and hunt in the hedgerows. Both were recently seen diving into the long grass by the windsock on the far side of the airfield. The most recent sighting was one of them hunting immediately opposite the farm gate just before dusk on the 5th April 2015. It is possible that they might be nesting on the farm in one of the owl boxes, but this is not confirmed. It is a delight to see such a rare bird at Fullers […]

Accommodation near RSPB Sandy – Little Gransden

RSPB reports on the plight of the Swallow The swallow was once common across the country as a farmyard bird during the summer months. Today however RSPB figures show that in many regions, there has been a marked decline their numbers. They were so common for many years, that no one thought they could become endangered, or even considered monitoring their numbers. Sadly the same is true of many other farmland birds. This delightful little bird, with its distinctive long forked tail and agile flight is a well known harbinger of summer. Swallows usually arrive in early April having flown the 4,000 miles from South Africa, where many spend the […]

Rowing the River Cam in Cambridge

Cambridge bumps If you stay at Cambridge holiday cottages in late feb/early march or June or indeed July, then a trip to the lower reaches of the River Cam in Cambridge  is well worthwhile for these  are the times of the bumping races on the river. Cambridge has a thriving rowing community. The colleges have a total of about 1500 active rowers and the town clubs about 700. At peak times the river is full of boats training. It is the busiest river in the country, yet is only just wide enough to spin an 8 oared boat in places. The river is simply not wide enough to race 2 […]

Fullers Hill Cottages near Cambridge

We are very lucky at Fullers Hill Cottages near Cambridge as, not only are we treated to seeing the Hares on the airfield, but we also have a herd of Fallow deer that visit the farm on an occasional basis. The deer escaped from a local stately home some years ago (I do not know which one) and clearly made their way up to SW Cambridgeshire. They took up residence in the remote Hayley Wood that lies to the East of the farm. The deer lived in the wood for many years until the woodland was purchased by a nature trust, who opened the wood to the public. The deer […]

Fullers Hill Cottages has geese on its pond

Fullers Hill geese The geese aka 9th, Battalion hatched into this world on 24th, July in North Norfolk.  They then started their 2 hour journey home to Fullers Hill Cottages, on the front seat of the car chirping away to their new surrogate mum, who was chatting back to them.  If they got slightly cold, they were gently placed within the bosom of surrogate mummy to warm up.  Not sure if that is a driving offense or not! Once safely home at Fullers Hill, the luxury surrounding under the heat lamp, sharing the chicken coup, they found very cosy.  After three weeks of nurturing and all creature comforts, it was time for […]

Riding at Fullers Hill

Getting the Eventing Bug 2012 has been a busy year so far, with my daughter Tara embarking on her first season of Eventing. We have owned our 15 year old Dutch Warmblood gelding Pinocchio for three years, who has obligingly taken part in a variety of equestrian activities from Pony Club rallies and camp to hunter trials, show jumping and dressage. He’s what’s commonly known in  ‘horsespeak’ as a good all-rounder, a rather over-used term, but in his case absolutely true. He’ll turn his hoof to anything and always participates with a smile on his face (yes horses can smile when you really get to know them!) So 2012 seemed […]

The mill stones at Cambridge Holiday Cottages Fullers hill.

The mill stones at Cambridge Holiday Cottages. Two mill stones from separate sources have found there way to Fullers Hill Cottages and used as decoration in the yard. The oldest stone was recovered from Gamlingay wind mill on Potton road. In 1977 Mark Jefferies an employee at Fullers Hill Farm with Barry Sherman was sent to help Mr Les Barford a well known and liked local builder.  Mr Barford who owned the site as a builder’s yard needed the mill demolishing as it had become extremely unsafe. The mill was probably disused by 1922. I recall scaling a long ladder to attach a rope to some part of the structure […]
