Barn Owls Spotted at Fuller’s Hill Cottages

This spring, at Fullers Hill Cottages, we have had a real treat. A pair of Barn Owls are frequently seen around the farm. They fly between the trees and buildings and hunt in the hedgerows. Both were recently seen diving into the long grass by the windsock on the far side of the airfield. The most recent sighting was one of them hunting immediately opposite the farm gate just before dusk on the 5th April 2015. It is possible that they might be nesting on the farm in one of the owl boxes, but this is not confirmed. It is a delight to see such a rare bird at Fullers […]

Butterflies, Swallows and Black Squirrels at Fuller’s Hill Cottages!

Wild life at the Cottages Lots of butterflies have been seen in The Tack Room garden recently. Mainly Red Admirals have been identified. The Red Admiral is a frequent visitor to gardens throughout the British Isles and one of our most well-known butterflies. This butterfly is unmistakable, with the velvety black wings intersected by striking red bands. This butterfly is primarily a migrant to our shores, although sightings of individuals and immature stages in the first few months of the year, especially in the south of England, mean that this butterfly is now considered resident. Swallows are currently congregating on the telephone wires at Fuller’s Hill Cottages before they fly […]

Flowers Are Blooming at Fullers Hill Cottages

Some wonderful Clematis and tulips are blooming at Fullers Hill Cottages (Near Gamlingay), as seen in these pictures. The Clematis, otherwise known as Old man’s beard, Traveller’s joy or Virgin’s bower, is by the main entrance to the cottages’ car park and is about 10 feet high. Did you know that Clematis is from the Buttercup family and is mainly of Japanese and Chinese origin? The Clematis is growing on the former wash house dating back to the 1800’s. In the laundry room used to be a big, metal urn with a fire underneath to heat the water when washing by hand. Cathy Jefferies does the gardening on the farm […]

Accommodation near RSPB Sandy – Little Gransden

RSPB reports on the plight of the Swallow The swallow was once common across the country as a farmyard bird during the summer months. Today however RSPB figures show that in many regions, there has been a marked decline their numbers. They were so common for many years, that no one thought they could become endangered, or even considered monitoring their numbers. Sadly the same is true of many other farmland birds. This delightful little bird, with its distinctive long forked tail and agile flight is a well known harbinger of summer. Swallows usually arrive in early April having flown the 4,000 miles from South Africa, where many spend the […]

Mill stones at Cambridge Holiday Cottages

The old millstone that you see beside Fullers Hill Farm cottages is not originally from the farm site but from a windmill at nearby Gamlingay that was demolished in 1977. It is one of a pair of stones, which when working together, were used to grind locally grown grain into flour. As you can see the millstone is constructed from a number of pieces of stone fitted together. These are set in plaster of Paris and held tightly together by an iron band shrunk or clamped around them. The stone used is known as French burr stone. It is from the Marne valley and much harder wearing than anything available […]

Fullers Hill Cottages near Cambridge

We are very lucky at Fullers Hill Cottages near Cambridge as, not only are we treated to seeing the Hares on the airfield, but we also have a herd of Fallow deer that visit the farm on an occasional basis. The deer escaped from a local stately home some years ago (I do not know which one) and clearly made their way up to SW Cambridgeshire. They took up residence in the remote Hayley Wood that lies to the East of the farm. The deer lived in the wood for many years until the woodland was purchased by a nature trust, who opened the wood to the public. The deer […]

Cambridge Holiday Cottages surrounded by wild life

On the wild side. Fullers Hill Cottages (also called Cambridge Holiday Cottages ) form part of of Fuller’s Hill Farm, which is a 450ha farm business in south west Cambridgeshire. The farm is also home to Lt. Gransden Airfield which is a small privately owned aerodrome with about 60 resident aircraft and a couple of aviation related businesses. So, not mush of a place for indigenous wildlife to live? This in fact could not be further from the truth. The farm and airfield provide a great refuge for many species of wildlife. The Brown Hare thrives on the airfield, particularly so in the late spring and early summer. During these […]

The mill stones at Cambridge Holiday Cottages Fullers hill.

The mill stones at Cambridge Holiday Cottages. Two mill stones from separate sources have found there way to Fullers Hill Cottages and used as decoration in the yard. The oldest stone was recovered from Gamlingay wind mill on Potton road. In 1977 Mark Jefferies an employee at Fullers Hill Farm with Barry Sherman was sent to help Mr Les Barford a well known and liked local builder.  Mr Barford who owned the site as a builder’s yard needed the mill demolishing as it had become extremely unsafe. The mill was probably disused by 1922. I recall scaling a long ladder to attach a rope to some part of the structure […]
