Conservation Agriculture

The working farm at Fullers Hill Cottages – Conservation Agriculture   There is a growing trend in the UK towards conservation agriculture. The Sea change is to use strong rooting cover crops to penetrate the soil in order to improve soil structure and drainage. This means that the soil does not need to be ploughed in the traditional manner. Ploughing has a dramatic effect upon soil life. It is the easiest way to kill earthworms that one can […]

Butterflies, Swallows and Black Squirrels at Fuller’s Hill Cottages!

Wild life at the Cottages Lots of butterflies have been seen in The Tack Room garden recently. Mainly Red Admirals have been identified. The Red Admiral is a frequent visitor to gardens throughout the British Isles and one of our most well-known butterflies. This butterfly is unmistakable, with the velvety black wings intersected by striking red bands. This butterfly is primarily a migrant to our shores, although sightings of individuals and immature stages in the first few months of the year, especially in the south of England, mean that this butterfly is now considered resident. Swallows are currently congregating on the telephone wires at Fuller’s Hill Cottages before they fly […]

Fullers Hill Cottages has geese on its pond

Fullers Hill geese The geese aka 9th, Battalion hatched into this world on 24th, July in North Norfolk.  They then started their 2 hour journey home to Fullers Hill Cottages, on the front seat of the car chirping away to their new surrogate mum, who was chatting back to them.  If they got slightly cold, they were gently placed within the bosom of surrogate mummy to warm up.  Not sure if that is a driving offense or not! Once safely home at Fullers Hill, the luxury surrounding under the heat lamp, sharing the chicken coup, they found very cosy.  After three weeks of nurturing and all creature comforts, it was time for […]

Wheat Harvest at Fullers Hill Cottages

Where did the wheat go? The Cambridge Holiday Cottages in the heart of the working farm at Fuller’s Hill Farm. The farm covers some 450ha of beautiful rolling countryside in SW Cambridgshire. The wheat harvest of 2012 will sadly go down in farming folk law as one of the worst in living memory.  The crop was one of the poorest yielding and worst quality that any living farmer can remember. At Fullers Hill Farm we did not produce a single ton of wheat that meet the basic quality standards for any use, not even for chicken feed. The most dis-appointing part of this was that in early June the wheat […]
