Conservation Agriculture

The working farm at Fullers Hill Cottages – Conservation Agriculture   There is a growing trend in the UK towards conservation agriculture. This is a “Sea change” in how farms have been farmed for hundreds of years. Conservation agriculture involves working with the environment to improve the structure, health and vitality of the soil. The Sea change is to use strong rooting cover crops to penetrate the soil in order to improve soil structure and drainage. This means that the soil does not need to be ploughed in the traditional manner. Ploughing has a dramatic effect upon soil life. It is the easiest way to kill earthworms that one can […]

RSPB reports on the plight of the Swallow The swallow was once common across the country as a farmyard bird during the summer months. Today however RSPB figures show that in many regions, there has been a marked decline their numbers. They were so common for many years, that no one thought they could become endangered, or even considered monitoring their numbers. Sadly the same is true of many other farmland birds. This delightful little bird, with its distinctive long forked tail and agile flight is a well known harbinger of summer. Swallows usually arrive in early April having flown the 4,000 miles from South Africa, where many spend the […]

Mill stones at Cambridge Holiday Cottages

The old millstone that you see beside Fullers Hill Farm cottages is not originally from the farm site but from a windmill at nearby Gamlingay that was demolished in 1977. It is one of a pair of stones, which when working together, were used to grind locally grown grain into flour. As you can see the millstone is constructed from a number of pieces of stone fitted together. These are set in plaster of Paris and held tightly together by an iron band shrunk or clamped around them. The stone used is known as French burr stone. It is from the Marne valley and much harder wearing than anything available […]

Fullers Hill Cottages near Cambridge

We are very lucky at Fullers Hill Cottages near Cambridge as, not only are we treated to seeing the Hares on the airfield, but we also have a herd of Fallow deer that visit the farm on an occasional basis. The deer escaped from a local stately home some years ago (I do not know which one) and clearly made their way up to SW Cambridgeshire. They took up residence in the remote Hayley Wood that lies to the East of the farm. The deer lived in the wood for many years until the woodland was purchased by a nature trust, who opened the wood to the public. The deer […]

The Old Plough

Outside the Old Dairy apartment. The history of this single furrow horse drawn plough is not known, however it’s been on the farm as long as I can recall. The primary purpose of ploughing is to turn over the upper layer of the soil, bringing fresh nutrients to the surface, while burying weeds, the remains of previous crops, and both crop and weed seeds, allowing them to break down. It also aerates the soil, allows it to hold moisture better and provides a seed-free medium for planting an alternate crop. In modern use, a ploughed field is typically left to dry out, and is then harrowed before planting. Modern competitions […]

The mill stones at Cambridge Holiday Cottages Fullers hill.

The mill stones at Cambridge Holiday Cottages. Two mill stones from separate sources have found there way to Fullers Hill Cottages and used as decoration in the yard. The oldest stone was recovered from Gamlingay wind mill on Potton road. In 1977 Mark Jefferies an employee at Fullers Hill Farm with Barry Sherman was sent to help Mr Les Barford a well known and liked local builder.  Mr Barford who owned the site as a builder’s yard needed the mill demolishing as it had become extremely unsafe. The mill was probably disused by 1922. I recall scaling a long ladder to attach a rope to some part of the structure […]
