Harvest 2017 at Fullers Hill Cottages

The working farm at Fullers Hill Cottages The harvest of 2017 is one that most farmers (if not all) will remember as a very difficult year. Harvest started in early July and as I write (10th October) still continues in the north of England and Scotland in what can only be described as dreadful conditions. The season got off to a very early start with Winter Barleys dying from drought in Suffolk. But the hot sunny conditions came to an abrupt end in mid July, when the summer rains set in. The following 6 weeks were decidedly damp. There were many localised and heavy storms as well as more general […]

Conservation Agriculture

The working farm at Fullers Hill Cottages – Conservation Agriculture   There is a growing trend in the UK towards conservation agriculture. This is a “Sea change” in how farms have been farmed for hundreds of years. Conservation agriculture involves working with the environment to improve the structure, health and vitality of the soil. The Sea change is to use strong rooting cover crops to penetrate the soil in order to improve soil structure and drainage. This means that the soil does not need to be ploughed in the traditional manner. Ploughing has a dramatic effect upon soil life. It is the easiest way to kill earthworms that one can […]

World Car Free Day!

Car Free Day is observed annually on September 22 and The Environmental Transportation Association set the first European Car Free Day in 2000. Take the bus. Walk. Ride a bike. Stay home.  But whatever you do, don’t travel by car on Car Free Day!  As a way to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels, promote mass transit, cycling, and walking, Car Free Day was developed based on regular car free days that have been a long standing practice in Europe and Scandinavia. Here at Fuller’s Hill Cottages, we can advise on fun and lovely things to do and places to go whilst leaving your car in the car park. You […]

Weaving New Life into Apple Cottage Garden

Now that the renovation of Apple Cottage is complete and we are already taking bookings, the time has come to start on the garden. My first project was to provide a boundary between the rear of Apple Cottage and its semi detached neighbour, Acorn Cottage. We required something that would give some privacy without overpowering the outdoor seating area, and also fit in with the rural surroundings. I came up with the idea of a living willow ‘Fedge’, a cross between a fence and a hedge, which seemed to offer the perfect solution. A company called The Willow Bank (www.thewillowbank.com) supply DIY kits which you can order on line, containing […]

MacMillan Coffee Morning

The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is Macmillan’s biggest fundraising event for people facing cancer. They ask people all over the UK to host their own Coffee Mornings and donations on the day are made to Macmillan. Last year alone they raised £25 million and this year they are aiming to raise even more. The first ever Coffee Morning happened way back in 1990. It was a rather small affair with a simple idea: guests would gather over coffee and donate the cost of their cuppa to Macmillan in the process. It was so effective, they did it again the next year – only this time nationally. Since then, Coffee Morning […]

They st  ayed in the Old Dairy, whilst the horses were stabled in our private stable yard behind Fullers Hill Farmhouse. The Gardens at Fullers Hill

The Hot Tub Garden This area, which  contains the communal hot tub, was designed and planted by myself in the summer of 2013. My intention was to create a relaxing, secluded outdoor space which could be enjoyed by our guests all year round. The plants I have chosen are all hard workers, providing long seasons of interest. From the earliest crocus which scatter the lawn in late February to the rich, warm pink and red hues of the Sedum in Autumn, there is always something to look at and enjoy. The ‘bones’ of the garden are the hard landscaped areas of paving and decking, providing form and structure, whatever the […]

The Butterfly Garden. This is the private garden for the Tack Room apartment, and is so called because of the profusion of butterflies that enjoy a particular plant which has rather taken over here! Verbena bonariensis grows tall and wiry, and is topped with abundant clusters of mauve flowers which are hugely attractive to butterflies and bees alike. It has long been one of my favourite plants, and fits well into almost any scheme, with a lengthy flowering period which carries on well into November if the weather is fairly mild. The flowers themselves have a luminescence which is very apparent on duller days, when their colour seems to become […]
