Cambridge Dragon Boat Festival

I am so excited about this weekend coming up. My dear friend Mary and her husband Simon are visiting from Germany and I have an action packed weekend in store for them, I will send them to the apartments at Fullers Hill cottages. They will be sleeping in our ‘Stables apartment’ as it is cosy, warm and very cute. Mary loves horses and I know she will feel quite at home. Mary and Simon moved to Germany 6 years ago and this is their first time back in her home town Cambridge. I have decided to treat them like tourists and remind them of what our beautiful city has to offer. It is a fantastic coincidence that this weekend Cambridge hosts the ‘Dragon Boat Festival’ on the River Cam. This event is all in aid of raising money for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices. What a great charity to raise money for and this is a charity close to my heart. Dragon boat racing is an ancient Chinese tradition where in a long boat up to ten people paddle as fast as they can, there is a drummer at the front beating time and someone at the tail steering a straight course. It looks great fun to take part (if only I was fit enough) and just as spectacular to watch (with a few beers on the riverbank!) This is the festivals eighth year and over forty crews are expected to arrive and race through the 200m course. We will be part of the hundreds of spectators lining up and cheering on the riverbank. This is not just a race but a whole day out, there will be plenty of family entertainment including children’s activities, food stools and outdoor bars. There is a special appearance from a dancing Chinese lion (which is incredible to watch) I just hope the rain stays away and we get a little sun, just enough to lie around on the grass and catch up with good friends.
